But right along the Columbia River in Longview and throughout Cowlitz County, Latino families have, little by little, shaped the region\u2019s economy, culture, and community for more than a century. Early Arrivals: Long Before the Lumber Mills<\/b><\/p>

Latinos have been part of Washington’s story since the days of Spanish exploration in the 1700s. While most early exploration happened along the coast, Latino workers started arriving in southwest Washington in larger numbers in the late 1800s. Some worked as mule packers for logging and mining camps. Others came through rail lines or followed seasonal farm work westward.<\/span><\/p>

Though Longview wasn\u2019t founded until the 1920s, the roots were already forming as Mexican and Latino workers traveled with the flow of labor and many landing in timber, agriculture, and transportation jobs that helped power the town’s growth.<\/span><\/p>

World War II was a turning point. With so many Americans off to war, labor shortages across the country led to the Bracero Program, a guest worker initiative that brought thousands of Mexican men to the United States for agricultural work.
